A Fight for the History Books

In the fourth round of the WBC title fight, Victor Ortiz had the undefeated Floyd Mayweather on the ropes. Ortiz was landing punch after punch for a good thirty seconds, until out of nowhere Ortiz head butts Mayweather. The referee immediately deducted one point from Ortiz. The boxers touched gloves to resume the fight but Ortiz for some reason goes in to hug Mayweather to apologize. Mayweather hit Ortiz with a strong left then with in a blink of an eye he hit him again with a sharp right and knocked Ortiz out.

On September 17th Victor Ortiz fought Floyd Mayweather for a title belt in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand. Leading up to the fight Mayweather was technically the challenger in the fight but he was the favorite to win with 5-1 odds. With a 41-0 record it’s hard not to have Mayweather as the favorite. Ortiz a 24 year old up and coming superstar was fighting against his first major superstar opponent. Mayweather was coming off of his 2 year hiatus and people were eager to see if he still was the same exciting Mayweather of the past. Ortiz is supposed to be the next big superstar making this fight a potential fight of the year. Many of boxing analysis’s thought that Mayweather was fighting Ortiz to prepare himself to fight Manny Pacquiao, who is ranked number one as pound for pound the best fighter in the sport.
In the first two rounds the boxers were feeling each other out as usual, with the majority of the punches landed by Mayweather. Round three we saw a better performance in the later goings of the round by Ortiz. He started to throw more punches and he was the aggressor for the last minute to minute and a half of the round. Mayweather still out punched Ortiz but the margin was a lot closer than the first round. Round three was a very close round to score; both boxers had their moments and scored well with each opportunity. This was what looked to be the turning point of the fight that would get Ortiz back into the fight.
The fourth round of the fight was one of, if not the most controversial round in boxing history. The round started off with Ortiz dominating the round. He was fast, accurate, and relentless with his punches and attack. Then just about half way through the round Ortiz has the undefeated may weather on the ropes and he is throwing punches like crazy and all of a sudden out of now where he head butts Mayweather in the mouth. That was an illegal blow and the referee took a point away from Ortiz. They touch gloves and they begin the fight again and Ortiz tries to hug and apologize during the fight to Mayweather. Mayweather hits him with a left then with a right and knocks Victor Ortiz out.
After a few minutes of celebrating from Mayweather, he went over to Ortiz and both boxers shook hands and hugged. Ortiz again apologized to Mayweather for the head butt. The entertainment wasn’t over yet; Larry Merchant was interviewing Floyd Mayweather and Mayweather answer Larry’s questions about the end of the fight. Merchant was asking the questions in a way that was unfair to Mayweather and Floyd eventually had enough of the one sided questions and told Merchant that he was done the interview because he was being one unfair. Merchant took exception to that and said “If I was 50 years younger I would kick your ass”. HBO quickly cut away from that scene and focused on another analyst. Mayweather improved his perfect record to 42-0 and Victor Ortiz’s record dropped to 29-3-2.
