HW:
FOR WEDNESDAY
Read Annie Dillard's "Living Like Weasels" http://www.courses.vcu.edu/ENG200-lad/dillard.htm
Print out and bring to class.
Write a brief response considering how you view Dillard's essay as "an attempt." Try to apply one or more of the quotes from the handout to Dillard's essay.
FOR WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY
Now that you have completed 4 pages exploring your ideas about the poem you have chosen, your job is to transform your exploration into a FOCUSED, PERSONAL essay.
The goal here is to restructure (re-write, re-order, cut, revise) your essay so that it uses the poem you have chosen to discuss or demonstrate something unique about you. You can portray an event in your life, or you can simply display how you think, or anything in between.
To help you do this, consider what we discussed in class today.
1. The word "essay" = "an attempt." Your job is to use the poem you've chosen to attempt to display and/or discuss something unique about you.
2. Refer to the quotes from professional essay writers that we discussed in class today. For your finished essay YOU MUST INCORPORATE at least part of one of the quotes into your own writing, i.e. use all or part of one of the quotes as an additional ingredient in your personal essay to help you analyze what you are attempting to accomplish.
*Bring 1 COPY of an updated draft to class on Wed.
* Final, graded copy is due Fri. (Make sure it is free of typos, is properly formatted, and that it has an original title)
