For Wed 9/21

*Please note, this represents a small schedule change*

1. Read "Life in the Dorms" p. 193 - 206 in OTHER WORDS. Write 1-page informal response.
Prompt: How do you react to Nathan's "reading" of dorm doors? Do you feel her analysis is accurate, why or why not? Thinking about your own experience, what would you add to Nathan's account? Where would you challenge her? Where do you agree with her? What else might she, or YOU, study with regard to college life?

2. Come to class with a written, brief plan of WHAT you will review, HOW you will do so, and your beginning ideas. REVIEW 1 will be due Friday Sept. 23.

3. Please also read, print out, and be ready to discuss these 2 NY Times reviews. These will be useful as we continue to get a sense of what makes a "good" review.

Class 9/19

5min: brainstorm aspects of campus life to review. List on board.

The Qualities of a "Good" Review
In groups, we'll share our response papers, and then work to answer the following questions:

1. Explain the beginning of your review. Hoiw would you characterize it? Why is it effective? Why did the writer choose to begin this way?

2. What kinds of things did the writer do in order to be able to write this review? How did he gather information? What kind of information did he gather? (Try to list as much as possible)

3. What is the reviewer's angle? What main points / themes does he develop and return to over the course of the review?

4. Break your review into several (at least 4) parts. Give each section a subject heading that explains what kind of information / ideas are in each part, and/or what that part does.
